Deams fascinate me. Those mad moments of rapid eye movement which take us into another universe. Which teach us so much about ourselves.

Last night I dreamed we were going to Los Angeles for a 2-week vacation. Before doing so, I packed our cat in a brown cardboard box, intending to take it with us. But when we arrived at our destination, neither the box nor the cat were anywhere to be seen. So how is it going to eat?

But perhaps the most famous dream is forgetting to get dressed before going to work. Then, like Adam and Eve, discovering yourself sitting at your desk stark naked. Why is it that none of your work colleagues have even noticed?

Don’t believe in ghosts? You will believe after you’ve met a real-life jinni. You will believe after you have been taken to a rooftop seance at an hour past midnight and seen a glass fly into the air and smash into the face of a sleeping child. You will believe when a young man, who was a champion swimmer, tells you how he was drowned in the waters of Hawkesbay and his body was washed towards the rocks at Sandspit. And all because it rained and he forgot the sadhu’s warning. You will believe!

In the half-light watching the shadows of the swordsmen dancing on the bedroom curtains. Thrusting. Parrying. Ducking. Advancing. Withdrawing. The ghosts of men who once fought and are doomed to fight forevermore. So I close my eyes. Hide under the bedclothes. But they will never be gone..
